Chris Smalling has maintained that he is the fastest player at Manchester United, claiming that he would win a sprint race ahead of all Old Trafford-based teammates.
The England international recently penned a new long-term deal with the Red Devils, and is trusted by Louis van Gaal.
Smalling's big claim
All the same though fans might be more than just a little surprised with his boast, particularly since he now shares a dressing room with players like Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia.

Speaking to United’s official website, Smalling used James Wilson’s acknowledgement of his speed as proof that he was the quickest player in Van Gaal’s fold.
"Yeah, I'm still backing myself. Willo [James Wilson] said I'm the fastest player and he is one of the quickest, but, yeah, I would back myself," Smalling said, when asked who was the quickest.
"There are obviously a lot of quick players but I'm ready for the test. Maybe not at the minute because we are training so much, but maybe during the season we can arrange that."
As quick as the others?
Of course such a claim is hard to quantify since the likelihood of Van Gaal letting his players race against each other in training is incredibly low. It could well be that Smalling is the fleetest of foot, but there’s sure to be plenty of his teammates who would make the same claim.
Indeed the aforementioned Valencia is a known speedster, and topped a graph a few years ago concerning the quickest player in football.
In that list the Ecuadorian beat the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Theo Walcott, so where that puts him alongside Smalling is a subject sure to be debated.
Then there’s Darmian, who showcased his speed perfectly during Italy’s opening game of the 2014 World Cup against England.
Both he and Valencia have plenty of space to get up and down the wing in matches, and so perhaps it’s unfair to compare Smalling - a centre-back - directly to them based on matches alone.
