Arsenal could be set to miss out on one of their defensive targets as Napoli have tabled a £21 million bid for Alessio Romagnoli.

According to talkSPORT, via La Reppubblica, the Italian side have tabled an offer for the 20-year-old who has been linked with a move to Arsenal, amongst other clubs.

Roma have already told Arsenal they value the player at £24.4m but Napoli could be able to barter with their fellow Italian side over the remaining fees.

AC Milan have previously had a £17.5m bid rejected for the player, who spent last season on loan at Sampdoria.

Napoli's offer signals their intent to bring the Italian, who represented his country at the Under-21 European Championships this summer, to the club ahead of interest from fellow Italian and English clubs.

Arsene Wenger is said to be a big admirer of the defender but has stated already this summer that he feels the Gunners do not have to sign a new defender in this window.

Roma are hoping to make a high amount of money from the sale of the defender to help finance a bid for Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko.

Arsenal themselves have been heavily linked with a striker this summer, with Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema being the names mentioned.
