Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has insisted that he cannot answer the question when asked about the possibility of Cristiano Ronaldo returning to the club this summer.

In his press conference ahead of this evening's pre-season clash with Spanish giants Barcelona, the Red Devils boss suggested that he's unable to discuss any transfer rumours during such a process.

Van Gaal, of course, has already secured the services of the quartet of Morgan Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian and Bastian Schweinsteiger in this transfer window, but the club may well continue to invest before the start of the new campaign.

And one man who has been linked with the club in recent days is Portuguese superstar Ronaldo, who left the Theatre of Dreams behind back in 2009.

Van Gaal, though, isn't giving anything away, as you will be able to see in the video below.

Ronaldo impossible but Pedro is ideal

Don't get me wrong, the signing of Ronaldo would be a remarkable one for United, but it's surely impossible. There's no way the Real hierarchy are going to want to sell the world's best player, so perhaps United officials should concentrate on landing Barcelona ace Pedro.

Ultimately, if Angel di Maria leaves Manchester behind, Pedro would prove a fine replacement, and would no doubt prove a wonderful signing for the club, as they go in search of both domestic and European success.
