Alex Iwobi is Jay Jay Okocha’s nephew and he plays for Arsenal.

On Saturday he was the surprise starter for the Gunners in the Emirates Cup as Arsenal took on Lyon in the annual preseason competition.

Arsenal ran riot, banging in four unanswered goals before half time and Iwobi had one of them. He was bright and lively from the start, embarrassing his opposite number with a lightning flick-flack barely ten minutes in.

As Arsenal poured forward he got plenty of touches from his left-wing position and scored the club’s third with an instinctive left-foot finish from 10 yards after a neat pass from Aaron Ramsey.

The 19-year-old was a key player for Arsenal’s academy last season, helping the young Gunners to the Youth Cup semi-finals.

Having signed his first pro deal with Arsenal 14 months ago, he’ll be looking to kick on this season. Wenger is clearly intrigued by his potential, and on this evidence Iwobi would be an excellent option for a Championship club in need of attacking creativity next season.

Realistically it would be a surprise to see the Lagos-born attacker make an impact on the Arsenal first-team in 2015 or the first half of 2016, but he certainly has the raw tools to develop into a capable Arsenal first-team option.

Many expected Dan Crowley to be the next star off the Arsenal production line, so for those who weren’t aware of Iwobi before today, it’s a nice bonus and another name to keep an eye on.

He lasted 60 minutes before being replaced by Santi Cazorla. With a goal to his name and a number of eye catching touches, it was not a bad way to introduce himself to the Gunners faithful.
