Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo is due to be fined two weeks wages for failing to meet up with Louis van Gaal’s squad on their pre-season tour of the US.
According to the Daily Mail Van Gaal is set to throw the book at Rojo, who was due to fly to the US on Saturday but did not board the plane.
It’s believed the Argentina international encountered passport problems stemming from the fact that he had not renewed it, meaning that he could not link up with his teammates Stateside.

Rojo was given an extended summer break due to his participation in the Copa America, wherein Argentina reached the final of the competition. As a result Van Gaal is reportedly even angrier, as the 25-year-old had ample time to renew his the necessary documents.
As way of punishment Rojo will lose out on two weeks wages - approximately £400,000 - with his situation not having been helped by the fact that compatriot Angel Di Maria also missed his flight, with reports suggesting the former Real Madrid man has gone AWOL.
Van Gaal angry
Van Gaal is naturally far from happy with the pair, but since Di Maria looks destined to now sign for French champions Paris Saint-Germain there’s little point in the 63-year-old taking the bulk of his frustrations out on him.
That spells bad news for Rojo, who is going to have to work hard to ensure that he remains in Van Gaal’s plans for the future. The Dutchman is said to be preparing to bolster his back-line, and with competition in certain areas already strong it could mean that casualties are to be expected.
Competition for places
Indeed Rojo, who can operate at both left-back and in the centre, has the likes of Luke Shaw, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling challenging him for a starting berth.
Add to that mix the potential signing of Nicolas Otamendi and maybe another high-profile name if Van Gaal gets his way, and there’s plenty of options for United moving forward.
That might present Rojo with a problem, especially since he wasn’t overly impressive last term. The ex-Sporting Lisbon man was decent enough when called upon but not special in anyone’s book, meaning that he’s got just as much chance of being chopped as his other teammates.
United fans, does Rojo deserve the proposed two week fine? Is there any chance he’ll struggle for game time this year? Let us know in the comments box below.
