Serie A side Napoli are on the brink of signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Vlad Chiriches, according to Sky Sport Italia.

The 25-year-old has failed to impress in north London since completing his £8.5million move to White Hart Lane two summers ago and images emerged last night of the Romanian arriving in Italy ahead of a proposed move.

Spurs signed Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest back in the summer of 2013 and he was one of several new faces that arrived in North London after Gareth Bale left to join Real Madrid.

However, two years and just 27 appearances later, the centre-back is set to leave the club and join Napoli.

Chiriches has been out of favour at White Hart Lane for the past season or so, and struggled to break into the first-team under Tim Sherwood and also under Mauricio Pochettino.

The defender started just eight Premier League games last season and was told in January that he could seek a loan move in order to play regular first-team football.

However, no clubs were interested in the Romanian and he was forced to stay put at Spurs and spend the remainder of the season on the sidelines.

Initially it was Fiorentina that looked likely to sign Chiriches, but it's now reported that Napoli are in pole position to land the Romanian international and will sign him in the next few days.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the two clubs have agreed a fee of just £3.5m with a potential £1.42m in add-ons and bonuses.

Tottenham's Activity

Tottenham have already signed two new defenders in the form of Toby Alderweireld and Kevin Wimmer and Chiriches has been informed that he is not in Pochettino's first-team plans for next season.

The Romanian is likely to become the second defender to leave White Hart Lane after Younes Kaboul completed a switch to Sunderland earlier in the summer.

Pochettino is selling a lot of players from Spurs' squad this summer, with three already gone and more to follow suit.

Chiriches, Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor are all expected to leave, following Paulinho, Etienne Capoue and Kaboul.
