Gold Coast Suns superstar Gary Ablett Jr has been ruled out for the remainder of the AFL season after suffering a medial ligament tear to his knee against Adelaide last weekend.

It marks a miserable end to the campaign for the dual-Brownlow winner, who's 2014 season was cut short by a shoulder injury, affectively curtailing the Suns hopes of a top eight finish and a maiden finals appearance.

"I've done some damage to the MCL, obviously the ligament in there. They’re saying about a grade two (tear) which will mean I’ve got to be in this brace for four weeks.

"That probably means I’m going to miss the rest of the season which is a bit disappointing. But that’s the way it goes. I'll just jump into rehab now and get it right for next season."

Having made just five appearances this season having suffered a recurrence of his shoulder problem, the young Suns have struggled in his absence, sitting 17th on the ladder having won just two of their 16 games this season.

staying positive

Widely regarded as the competition's best player, AFL fans will be hoping Ablett's injury struggles can be put behind him ahead of 2016, however the injury is not expected to hamper his pre-season.

Dr Peter Larkins said:

"In normal circumstances it would be a five-to-six week absence anyway, and then he'd be fine to play. It won't impact on pre-season next year.

"He's had a horrible year, but at least we'll see him back with both the shoulder and knee ready to go."
