Northampton Town starlet Ivan Toney is reportedly having a medical at Premier League side Newcastle United according to the Mirror, one of Newcastle's 'preferred media partners'.

On a busy day on Tyneside given Chancel Mbemba's arrival from Belgium giants Anderlecht, 19-year-old Toney could become Newcastle's fourth summer signing if he signs on the dotted line.

The fee is believed to be in the region of £500,000.

The potential move comes after the youngster was left out of Northampton's friendly win over Exeter on Saturday.

Then, Northampton manager Chris Wilder declared:

"There's been interest from Championship and Premier League clubs and we took the decision not to involve Ivan."

Northampton chairman Graham Cardoza also confirmed Newcastle's interest a few weeks ago.

One for the future

Seen as one for the future, Toney will join a competitive strike-force made up of recent acquisition Aleksander Mitrovic, Senegal international Papiss Cisse, Ayoze Perez and Frenchman Emmanuel Riviere.

It is thought that Magpies boss Steve McClaren may well look to loan the hot-shot out to a Football League club after his expected arrival at St James' Park.

Fan favourite Toney made his first team debut at just 16 years of age for the Cobblers in November 2012, and has gone on to make 60 appearances for his hometown club, scoring 11 goals in the process.
