When the likes of Dez Bryant, Justin Houston and Demaryius Thomas were getting their bumper new contracts a couple of weeks back, there was one star name conspicuous by his absence.
After losing a finger in a fireworks incident over the July 4th holiday weekend, Jason Pierre-Paul effectively fore-fitted his right to a new contract as mystery engulfed his future in the game.
And now, with every New York Giants player except JPP having reported for camp, franchise co-owner John Mora has revealed that much of that mystery still remains - even admitting he doesn't know exactly how many fingers the defensive end has left at this point.

One of the most bizarre things in the whole saga was the fact that the New York Giants had to learn of the severity of Jason Pierre Paul's injury through ESPN, rather than the player himself.
Pierre-Paul refused to meet with Giants officials at the start of the month and, according to Mora, he is still yet to sit down face-to-face with anyone at the organization - conversation limited to a few texts and emojis.
In the dark
At this stage Jason Pierre-Paul remains unsigned and the Giants co-owner is cleary frustrated with the whole situation:
"You say, 'This kind of injury,'" came Mora's response to media queries this week.
"We don't know how extensive the damage is right now...That is the problem.
"I don't know how many fingers he has. We know what we've read and what we've been told, but until we actually see him and the extent of the damage, it's hard to make any sort of prediction as to what kind of condition he's in."
The fact that the Giants are still basing their opinion on a mixture of medical reports obtained via morally questionable means and comments from JPP's agent is far from ideal.
New York are clearly willing to welcome Pierre-Paul back and help assess the healing process but the player seems to be trying their patience with his head in the sand reaction.
Few people outside the DE's inner circle know the true impact the amputation will have on his playing career and, with training camps across the league now up and running, that is a worrying situation.
