Jose Mourinho has confirmed Chelsea are trying to sign FC Augsburg left-back Baba Rahman, stating that his side need a new player in that position.

Filipe Luis’ return to Atletico Madrid has left the Blues with just Cesar Azpilicueta who can operate on the left side of Mourinho’s defence, and as a result the club have been repeatedly linked with players who might be able to fill the void.

Mourinho confirmation

However, despite the fact Galatasaray defender Alex Telles is also believed to be in the frame, Mourinho has admitted the speculation surrounding Rahman’s potential purchase is true.

“He is Augsburg player so I don’t speak," Mourinho said, as per the Daily Express.

"But we try. We don’t have, we have only one left-back. We are trying."

Highly rated

The young Bundesliga man has made a name for himself at Augsburg, with his club chief recently admitting he would rather the player stayed with the club than left for a hefty figure.

It’s said £20million could be the sum that draws him away, and such figures aren’t likely to be an obstacle in any shape to Chelsea.

As the Blues attempt to retain their Premier League title it’s sure to be a tough season for Mourinho, who has thus far only signed Radamel Falcao - on a season long loan - and Asmir Begovic, the latter as backup to Thibaut Courtois.

A deal definite?

It can be expected that the Special One will indeed land a new left-back, as it’s incredibly rare that the Portuguese coach allows himself to kick off a campaign with any position obviously understaffed.

Whether or not Rahman is good enough to do what Luis couldn’t and force Azpilicueta from his starting berth remains to be seen.
