Swansea City could hijack Southampton's move for Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk has been heavily linked with a move away from Celtic this season after a number of successful seasons, and the rumour mill has churned out another potential suitor for the big Dutchman in Premier League outfit Swansea.

After a supposed £8million offer was tabled for the centre-back by Southampton earlier this week, it looks like another Premier League team are prepared to launch a bid for the 23-year-old, who may leave Celtic Park for European football, providing the Bhoys fail to qualify.

Move hinging on...

A move all depends on the progression of Celtic, who go in to Friday's draw for the knockout stage following a goalless draw with Azerbaijan side Qarabag, resulting in Celtic going through on aggregate.

Southampton are apparently holding out for that scenario, but a move being delayed now may end their interest. However, Swansea remain keen on the services on the defender, according to Metro, citing the South Wales Evening Post.

Strong speculation

Rumours have linked Van Dijk with a move to Wales, after Southampton reportedly lodged an £8m bid for the player who scored ten goals from defence last season, including a string of impressive free kicks.

Swansea are looking to hijack the bid, with Southampton now stalling, but the pressure is on now for the Welsh outfit to launch an offer that would be acceptable for the Scottish champions and tempting enough for Van Dijk to potentially take the step down to Europa League football.

The Premier League is undoubtedly the talented defender's next destination as the rumours continue to circulate. However, with a string of clubs all fighting for his signature it's not set in stone who exactly will win the race for the Dutchman.
