Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi has been told he is free to join another club this summer, according to reports.

The former Real Sociedad ace has failed to fight his way into the first team since moving to the Bernabeu in 2013, and is now being linked with an exit.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with the 25-year-old, who cost Real Madrid around £22 million, in this window and it now appears as though there could be a breakthrough in the saga.

The Independent, citing reports in Spain, claim this morning that Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez has informed the Spaniard that he is surplus to requirements for the upcoming season and will be allowed to move.

Madrid currently have the likes of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Lucas Silva, Casemiro and Denis Cheryshev who can operate in midfield and appear to have decided that Illarramendi is the one to miss out.

That will be a huge boost to Liverpool, who are believed to be lining up an offer worth £15 million and could lodge a bid shortly.

So far the Reds have bought in seven new players in the summer transfer window including big-money buys Roberto Firmino and Christian Benteke. Star player Raheem Sterling has left to join Manchester City however, and Rodgers is under pressure to deliver Champions League football back to Anfield this term.

So far in pre-season Liverpool have looked solid and they'll be looking to get off to a quick start when the take on Stoke in their first game of the season this weekend.

What mark do you give Liverpool's transfer business out of 10 so far?
