Football News

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that David de Gea will not play against Tottenham on Saturday due to the intense speculation surrounding his future.

De Gea has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid all summer - and Van Gaal has revealed that the Spain international is not in the right frame of mind to play against Spurs in United’s Premier League opener.

“De Gea will not play,” Van Gaal was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail on Friday morning. ”A player is also a human being. He cannot manage that. We will have to see who starts.”

With Victor Valdes demoted to the Under-21 squad following a row with Van Gaal, Manchester United will line up with either Sam Johnstone or summer signing Sergio Romero in goal against Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Johnstone, 22, is likely to get the nod, having made several appearances for United on the club’s pre-season tour.

De Gea now likely to join Real Madrid

Romero has yet to play a single minute for the Red Devils following his involvement with Argentina in the Copa America in Chile earlier this summer.

Van Gaal’s decision to drop De Gea, who the Dutch coach recently hinted wanted to leave Old Trafford, suggests there’s a real chance the world-class 24-year-old could secure his dream move tot the Bernabeu before the transfer window closes on September 1.
