David de Gea declared himself ready to play against Tottenham

David de Gea was left out of Manchester United’s squad to play Tottenham on Saturday despite telling Louis van Gaal he wanted to play beforehand.

This is according to the Daily Mail, who understand De Gea has also made himself available for this Friday’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa, but is expected to be left out again in favour of Sergio Romero and Sam Johnstone.

De Gea has trained ‘perfectly well’ over the past fortnight, according to Daily Mail sources, and has not intimated to Van Gaal that he would refuse to play for the Red Devils in order to force a move to Real Madrid.

Van Gaal told reporters prior to the 1-0 win over Spurs that De Gea was not in the right frame of mind to play against Spurs and subsequently handed a Manchester United debut to Romero.

The gamble ultimately paid off for the veteran Dutch coach, as Romero kept a clean sheet and ensured a winning start for the Red Devils.

Van Gaal was right to drop De Gea

It’s understood that several Manchester United players were surprised by Van Gaal’s decision to start Romero ahead of De Gea, who made a couple of mistakes on his previous appearance for the Red Devils against Paris Saint-Germain last month.

But Van Gaal is clearly planning for a future without De Gea and wants Romero to gain as much exposure to Premier League football as possible in case the Spaniard leaves Old Trafford before the transfer window closes on September 1.
