Manchester United are set to sign Lazio midfielder Lucas Biglia for £17.5 million this week.

This is according to The Sun, who understand the Argentina international is poised to become United’s sixth summer signing.

Pedro was expected to become the Red Devils’ next acquisition, but Barcelona could delay the move for a couple of weeks after Neymar contracted mumps. It is, however, still very likely United will land the Spanish World Cup winner this month.

Like Pedro, Louis van Gaal wants Biglia signed ahead of Manchester United’s crucial Champions League play-off first leg against Club Brugge on August 18.

The 29-year-old has been on Van Gaal’s radar throughout the summer but United now stand a much better chance of signing the industrious South American midfielder after Lazio secured the services of highly-rated Serbia Under-21 international Sergei Milinkovic in a £9 million deal from Genk this summer.

Lucas Biglia would be a useful addition

Manchester United fans might wonder why the signing of Biglia is necessary following the recent arrivals of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin, but Van Gaal clearly feels his midfield options require bolstering in order to boost the Red Devils’ Premier League title hopes.

Securing qualification for the Champions League group stages is equally as important for Manchester United.

Van Gaal has been handed a favourable draw in the form of Belgian outfit Club Brugge - and failure to qualify for the group stages, after the incredible amount of money the Dutchman has spent over the past 12 months, would be a significant and serious failure.

With Michael Carrick not getting any younger, Schneiderlin still adjusting to life at the very top level and doubts over Schweinsteiger’s long-term fitness, Biglia could prove to be an important signing for Van Gaal.
