Tottenham Hotspur are confident of signing one of either Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez or West Brom’s Saido Berahino this summer, according to reports.

The London Evening Standard claims today that Mauricio Pochettino remains intent on signing a forward before the end of the summer transfer window, and the aforementioned pair are top of his wish-list.

Spurs were bested 1-0 by United at Old Trafford during their opening game of the Premier League season, and with pressure on Harry Kane to provide goals another option is needed if the Lilywhites are to challenge for a top four position.

Hernandez interest

First off there’s Hernandez, who the Standard say is keen to leave United having been cut out of the first-team picture by Louis van Gaal.

The Mexican was loaned out to Real Madrid last season but failed to impress enough to earn a permanent move there. As a result he’s been ushered back into the Red Devils’ fold, but he’s still too far down in the pecking order to hope for regular football.

A loan deal for the 27-year-old is more likely, but United are sure to be unwilling to strengthen a top-for rival. After all, Chicharito has proven that he can score goals when given the chance.

Then there’s Berahino, who looked the part during the early stages of last season but has fallen off the wagon to a degree since.

Spurs were in contact with West Brom over a potential deal for him last month, but the powers that be at The Hawthorns want in excess of £20m for his signature.

Who is better?

Of the two it’s perhaps Hernandez who would be the better purchase, especially since he’s proven over a number of years that he has what it takes to find the net when offered the stage.

Berahino meanwhile could have more longevity, but question marks will remain over his consistency until he’s been around for a little while longer. He’ll have his first chance to shine when the Baggies take on Manchester City tonight.
