Former France midfielder Emmanuel Petit believes some of the players at his former club Monaco are "not good enough to play in Ligue 1".

Petit started his career with a nine-year spell at Les Rouge et Blanc, winning the league title and Coupe de France there in 1997, but the club now find themselves threatened by relegation and the former Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona man insists the problem stems from a lack of quality players.

He told L´Equipe: "When I was there the club bought (Christian) Panucci, (Oliver) Bierhoff and (Vladimir) Jugovic, and coming through was (Ludovic) Giuly and (Marcelo) Gallardo. They are not really investing these days and some of the players at the club are not at the required level."
