Abdul Baba Rahman's move from Augsburg to Chelsea in inching closer to completion following the news the Ghanaian left-back has passed his medical at Stamford Bridge.

It was reported last week, by Rahman's agent, that terms had been agreed between the player and club, then it was revealed a £21.7 million deal had been agreed between the club.

Now, according to Christian Falk, chief football editor of Bild, Rahman has now completed a medical at Chelsea and has returned to Augsburg to await the end of negotiations.

Jose Mourinho has become increasingly frustrated with the clubs inability to sign a back up to Cesar Azpilicueta before the season kicked off, but it now appears to be just a matter of time before the Blues have their man.

The Special One today insisted you do not have to be top of the league in spending to be top of the league come the end of the season, hinting he is happy with the squad he has assembled at Stamford Bridge.

However, defeat in the game against Manchester City could set the early alarm bells ringing for the defending champions.

While were are only a week into the new season, a draw and a defeat from the opening two games would spell disaster for Chelsea in the defence of their title.

It would also be an early momentum boost to City, who looked ominous in their 3-0 dismantling of West Bromwich Albion on Monday.

Defeat at the Etihad could convince Mourinho that he needs to invest more in his squad before the window ends with some questions marks looming over their depth in the wide positions and ability to score goals in the absence of Diego Costa.
