In news that will disappoint a number of Arsenal fans, Rafa Benitez has hinted Karim Benzema will stay at Real Madrid and has big plans for the French forward this season.

Last week it was confirmed Arsene Wenger had been handed the green light to bring the 27-year-old to the Emirates, but it appears his future, for the short-term at least, remains in Madrid.

In an interview with Spanish publication El Pais, Benitez confirmed he had big aspirations for Benzema and expected the striker to pass the 20 goal mark this season.

The former Liverpool boss said: "For example, the centre of the field have a better environment in contention and another on the pass. Depending on the game you can take one or the other.

In the case of forward, as well. Benzema is a great player. And one of my ideas this year is to exceed the barrier of 20-25 goals. That I have put a lot of confidence."

It has been reported that Arsenal are interested in Borussia Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, as an alternative to Benzema.

The Gunners picked up their first points of the new season with a 2-1 win against Crystal Palace, and Olivier Giroud opened his account for the season.

The French striker has come in criticism with many people believing he does not have the ability to fire Arsenal to the league title.

The 28-year-old has scored 43 goals in 97 league appearances since joining from Montpellier, and has significantly improved his overall contribution to the team throughout his time in North London.

If he is able to stay fit, given the creative influences around him, Giroud has a perfect chance to break the 20 goal mark and have a huge influence on the title chase.

He may not take Arsenal all the way to the title, but responsibility can not rest solely on his shoulders, the midfield and centre of defence also needs invest to take Arsenal make to the top.

However, the opportunity to sign another forward to compliment Giroud should not be passed up by Wenger.
