Memphis Depay, despite scoring his first two goals for Manchester United, was unhappy following Tuesday night’s 3-1 victory over Club Brugge in the Champions League play-off round first leg.
The Netherlands international, who scored a spectacular brace in the Red Devils’ crucial win, expressed his frustration at failing to complete his hat-trick during his post-match interview.
After that, according to IMG Premier League Productions’ reporter Ian Irving, Depay went to the interview room before sitting himself on the floor and saying: “I should’ve had four”.
The 21-year-old was being a little harsh on himself, although he should have scored at least three goals on the night.
He was presented with one brilliant opportunity to complete his hat-trick in the second half but fluffed his lines, much to his immense frustration.
Van Gaal: 'I want to kiss Memphis'
But his manager, Louis van Gaal, was unconcerned after the match.
"I want to kiss him tonight,” the veteran Dutch coach was quoted as saying by Sky Sports News. “I’m very happy for him because a player needs that.
"Hopefully he shall continue to score. I have confidence in him. He showed what he can do tonight. He scored two goals and got the assist for the other."
United fans impressed
Depay also earned rave reviews from the Manchester United supporters, many of whom are now convinced they have a potential superstar on their hands.
They will also be impressed by his reaction after the final whistle. That he was frustrated after failing to complete his hat-trick, rather than delighted with his brace, is a trait that many ambitious footballers possess.
