The WWE Universe lost one of its most iconic Superstars at the end of July when Rowdy Roddy Piper passed away, and now the cause of his death has been revealed.

As reported by TMZ, Piper (real name Roderick George Toombs) suffered a heart attack brought on by a pulmonary embolism (blood clot) in his lungs.

The news comes with TMZ having obtained access to Piper's death certificate.

Unfortunately Piper had a history of high blood pressure, both during and after his wrestling career, and there are suggestions that this may have contributed to the blood clots.

The revelation comes one week after the wrestling community came together to pay their respects to Roddy Piper at the former Superstar's funeral.

Having contributed almost half a century of his life to professional wrestling - his death certificate noting his "45 years" work as a pro wrestler - it is tragic that Roddy Piper lost his life at such a relatively young age, passing away not long after his 61st birthday.

Although he was a heel character, the response from the WWE Universe to his death proved just how much of an impact he had had during his time in the business.

But with blood clots and heart attack now known to have caused his death, Piper has unfortunately joined a growing list of wrestlers who suffer heart issues following the end of their career.

Today's news will only increase pressure on the WWE to act to help and protect its stars in the future.
