Villanova, who had been in charge at third division side Huesca, was quickly drafted in after Irureta´s departure and the veteran becomes Zaragoza´s fourth coach of the season following Irureta, Ander Garitano and Victor Fernandez.
Villanova´s immediate job will be to improve Zaragoza´s standing in the table, with the team slipping to 17th place in the wake of Sunday´s 2-1 defeat against rock-bottom Levante.
