Liverpool midfielder Joao Carlos Teixeira sent a message to first-team manager Brendan Rodgers with an impressive display for the under-21s in their 3-3 draw with Everton in the 'mini' Merseyside derby.

The Reds threw away a three-goal advantage in Southport, with Portuguese playmaker Teixera grabbing the third for his side with a well-struck long range effort.

It wasn't enough to help secure victory in the end, which was a disappointment for the former Sporting Lisbon academy product, but he was happy to get his name on the score sheet for Michael Beale's side.

"It's disappointing [the result] but it was good for me, I played well, and I need to get fit," he told the official Liverpool website.

"In my position I always want to score or assist, that's my job and it's what I try to do every single game I'm on the pitch."

"We started very well and the first half was good but we weren't good enough to [stay] ahead of them and we drew. We [will] learn from our mistakes and we weren't good enough to win this game.

"It's a different game against Everton, it's always good to play these derby games and I enjoyed it."

Senior boss Rodgers will be well aware of the talent Teixeira possesses, having taken the 22-year-old on the pre-season tour of Thailand, Australia, Malaysia and Finland with the first team.

The youngster admits he revelled in the experience, believing that training alongside some of the top professionals at Liverpool will only benefit him as a player moving forward.

"When you play with good players you always improve," he added.

"It's always good to be around Melwood and the pre-season was good, I enjoyed it, I played a few games and I tried to do my best."

Signed in 2012, Teixera has made one Premier League appearance for Liverpool, and enjoyed stints away from Anfield on loan at Brentford in 2013 and Brighton last season.
