Manchester United players might yet be still becoming accustomed to the rigours of the new Premier League season, but one man in particularly is already under scrutiny from the mass media. Captain Wayne Rooney has struggled to make an impression as the lone striker in Louis van Gaal’s system so far this campaign, with questions being fielded as to his suitability. Well, Dutch legend and former Chelsea man Ruud Gullit has recently had his say, and he believes Van Gaal has to think about other options. Gullit said Rooney was not a ‘proper striker’ and pointed out the fact that he had struggled against Club Brugge as proof that alterations need to be made to United’s frontline. Meanwhile Southampton have poured water over speculation suggesting the Red Devils are to sign Sadio Mane. Reports yesterday suggested United had targeted the Saints star, but the south-coast club say he is an important part of their future and so won’t be moving on.
