Arsenal for Illarra
The back and forth regarding whether or not Arsene Wenger will push to sign a new holding midfielder this summer has become a staple of the transfer window.
In keeping with this we’ve got the latest on Arsenal’s supposed pursuit of Real Madrid’s Asier Illarramendi, with Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo today claiming that the Gunners are interested in making a bid.
Since Los Blancos recently signed Mateo Kovacic it can be assumed they’re looking to offload the former Real Sociedad man, though Arsenal will have Liverpool for company.
That’s despite rumours yesterday from other Spanish sources stating Wenger had lost interest. Confusing indeed.
Elsewhere Wenger has labelled young Wellington Silva as ‘stunning’. It might come as a surprise since the Brazilian has never featured for Arsenal’s senior side and is now on loan at Bolton Wanderers, but what can we say? Wenger works in mysterious ways.
Whether not Wellington have a long-term future in north London is a matter that could be decided by his form in Bolton. Here’s to hoping he’s the real deal.
Wenger on record
Lastly Wenger has gone on record confirming that he expects Arsenal to do another transfer deal before the end of the window, but that the Gunners aren’t close to signing anyone currently.
The FA Cup holders have been linked tentatively with a move for Karim Benzema, although that deal looks wholly unlikely now.
