Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has admitted that new Chelsea signing Pedro would have been the right fit for the club, but has insisted that he never said the former Barcelona man was signing for the Red Devils.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Van Gaal, who was speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of United's Premier League clash with Newcastle United tomorrow afternoon, has even admitted that the signing of Pedro would have been the 'easiest transfer' because the player had a clause in his contract.

It appears, then, that Van Gaal wasn't totally convinced over the signing of the Spanish international, which ultimately led the 28-year-old to sign for Chelsea.

The United boss told reporters: "I think when we want Pedro it was not any problem because there was a clause in his contract. It was the easiest transfer. I have said before what we are doing is guiding a process and in that process we make decisions."

Of course, Ed Woodward has been in the spot light in recent time, but the Red Devils chief has insisted that he trusts the club's executive vice-chairman.

Pedro saga

He continued by saying: "You want to separate Ed Woodward and me. Never. Every day I am updated by him and I trust him. I don’t think that people have to doubt Ed Woodward because he has proven for many years that he is the right person on the right spot.

"We cannot say what we want. I have the responsibility of protecting the interests of the club and my players, and I cannot say too much.

"When you ask me if Pedro would fit the profile I cannot lie. I cannot deny that because he is fast and creative. That’s why I answered that question. Then people think he is coming to Manchester United. I have never said that. I said to ask Pedro.

"Barcelona protect their interest and I have read for example that Barcelona didn’t want to let him go. You have to ask Barcelona how it can happen then. I don’t want to let know my strategy with players.

Bizarre but not a disaster

Let's be honest, United's failure to sign Pedro was a surprise to us all, but clearly Van Gaal wasn't totally convinced that he was the right player for the club, as they continue to move forward.

It's not everyday that a player in the mould of Pedro becomes available at such a price, but clearly Van Gaal has someone else in mind. United fans will no doubt be hoping for a couple of additions before the close of the transfer window, but you have to remember that they have a number of fine attacking options already at their disposal.

Memphis looks set to take the Premier League by storm, while United also have youngsters Adnan Januzaj and Andreas Pereira in their ranks. The signing of Pedro would have only slowed their progression down in Manchester, so all is not lost. Of course, Mane from Southampton has been mentioned as a potential signing, and the Senegal international may well just surprise one or two should he complete a move to the Theatre of Dreams.
