Zach Zenner turning heads during Detroit Lions pre-season

Football News

The Detroit Lions seem to be blessed at the running back position right now.

When their starting running back gets healthy and comes off the PUP list - thought to be early next week - the Lions will go in to the 2015 season with Joique Bell, Ameer Abdullah, and Theo Riddick all fighting for touches of the ball.

But you could be set to add another name to that list, with undrafted rookie Zach Zenner putting in some incredible performances so far during the pre-season.

A Nobody

When the Lions signed Zenner as an undrafted rookie in May, he looked like the classic training camp body who wouldn't be able to make an NFL roster.

Whilst he did put up three separate 2000-yard rushing seasons, he did them at South Dakota State University, which isn’t exactly known as a great breeding ground for for NFL talent.

Starring Performances

But through two preseason games, Zenner is putting on the kind of performance that will make it tough for the Lions to cut him.

He looked good in Detroit’s first preseason game last week, and last night in the second preseason game he was even better: Zenner had four carries for 22 yards and five catches for 59 yards and a touchdown, plus a 45-yard run that was called back by a holding penalty.

Whilst Ameer Abdullah is the rookie who is drawing all the plaudits in pre-season, Zach Zenner is definitely a name to keep an eye out for.
