Hamburg all but booked their spot in the next round of the UEFA Cup after grabbing a comfortable 3-1 victory at FC Zurich in the first leg of their last-32 tie.

Despite playing nearly the final hour without captain and playmaker Rafael van der Vaart, Hamburg tallied three goals in the second half to cruise to a convincing win.

David Jarolim opened the scoring in the 49th minute before Ivica Olic doubled the advantage in the 67th. Piotr Trochowski joined the scorers with 77 minutes gone before Zurich pulled one back just before the end through Eric Hassli.
