Arsenal are set to make an enquiry about Lars Bender after sending scouts to monitor his progress, according to reports.

The Gunners have needed a defensive central midfield option for some time, however it looked as though boss Arsene Wenger was happy to deploy Francis Coquelin in that role this term after a successful spell in the team last time round.

However it appears as thought he French boss may have had a change of heart, and now the Mirror claim that Bender is in his sights.

The German international has been linked with a move to Arsenal for some time, and according to the Mirror the Gunners had representatives present at his Bayer Leverkusen side's 1-0 midweek defeat at Lazio in the Champions League qualifying playoffs.

Wenger is running out of time to get deals done before the window slams shut. So far he's only managed to land Petr Cech from Chelsea for around £10 million, although it's been claimed that the Frenchman could make a swoop for Karim Benzema.

Wenger is adamant that he has the money to sign who he pleases, but insists that he won't spend just for the sake of it. He said: "Of course, there is pressure to keep up with them. All of them have spent more money – although only one can win the title.

“You have to keep your nerve and not buy just because others buy, but because you have found a player who can really give you a plus.”

Arsenal take on Liverpool in their third Premier League game of the season at the Emirates Stadium this evening.
