Chelsea could yet make a move for Argentine international Ezequiel Garay before the close of the transfer window.
This has been reported by the Daily Mail, who claim that the Blues could swoop for the Zenit St Petersburg defender as an alternative to talented Everton youngster John Stones.
Stones, of course, has been heavily linked with a move to west London of late, however the Merseyside outfit appear to be determined to keep the player at the club for the foreseeable future. In fact, the same report from the Mail claims that the Toffees would only consider a bid in the region of £40 million for the England international's services.

It appears, then, that if Jose Mourinho and Co. fail to land Stones in the coming days, then they could swoop for 28-year-old Garay.
Chelsea, of course, have endured a tricky opening to the Premier League season in the defensive department, having conceded seven goals in their first three games, so it's not entirely surprising that the club are hoping to add to their defensive options sooner rather than later.
Benefits of Garay
And Garay wouldn't be a bad alternative signing for the club, as they go in search of improvement. Ok, the signing of Stones would no doubt prove a wonderful coup for the club, as he'd have so much to offer on a long-term basis, but landing Garay would have its benefits, too.
At 28, the Argentine would bring a great deal of experience to the Chelsea back-line, and would certainly prove a fine option on both the domestic and European scene for the Blues.
If Chelsea are serious about winning the Champions League this season, then they may well need a reliable back-up for the likes of John Terry and Gary Cahill. Garay may even have the credentials to replace either player in the first-team should he arrive at Stamford Bridge.
