Manchester United believe they stand a genuine chance of signing Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale before the transfer window closes on September 1.

This is according to ESPN, who have been told by sources at Old Trafford that United officials are growing increasingly optimistic of bringing the Wales international back to the Premier League.

Real Madrid remain determined to sign goalkeeper David de Gea before next week’s deadline and Manchester United believe the Spanish giants might be open to doing a deal involving Bale if it results in the acquisition of the world-class goalkeeper.

Los Blancos expected to have a deal for De Gea wrapped up by now, while the player is becoming increasingly fearful that his dream move to the Bernabeu will not happen this summer.

De Gea has been omitted from Manchester United’s previous four match-day squads and has not travelled to Belgium for this evening’s crucial Champions League play-off round second leg against Club Brugge as speculation surrounding his future rumbles on.

Van Gaal wants Gareth Bale

United feel their chances of signing Bale, who wants to prove his worth at the Bernabeu following a difficult second season in the Spanish capital, will significantly increase if Real Madrid fans boo the former Tottenham star against Real Betis this weekend.

Bale was targeted by Real Madrid supporters on multiple occasions last season and might be tempted to leave Spain after two seasons if he feels he cannot win over the Bernabeu crowd.

Manchester United fans are still holding out hope that a marquee signing will arrive at Old Trafford before next Tuesday’s deadline - and there’s no player Louis van Gaal would like to sign more than the world-class Real Madrid forward.
