Greg Rutherford jumped his way to world championship gold in Beijing and in doing so put himself along the few British athletes to hold Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth titles at one time.

Only Linford Christie, Daley Thompson, Sally Gunnell and Jonathan Edwards have done the same.

Win on the cards

Rutherford joined Jessica Ennis-Hill and Mo Farah in winning gold at China's National Stadium,  just as the trio did on the famous Super Saturday of the 2012 London Olympics.

The 28-year-old's forth jump of 8.41m saw him finish well clear of Australian Fabrice Lapierre (8.24m) who took silver and home favorite Jianan Wang (8.18m) in bronze position.

It is the first time a Briton has won a long jump world medal and even though he was feeling ill in the morning before the event, the big competition specialist produced the goods when it mattered, leading to tears of joy afterwards.

His winning jump is a stadium record and quite a contrast from the first time he competed in the Bird' nest back in the Olympics of 2008, where he finished down in an invisible 10th place. It is also the second best jump he has achieved in his career.

He told BBC Sport: "I'm a bit lost for words. What an incredible night. This was my best ever performance."

A dominating presence

Coming into the championships, Rutherford wasn't considered as one of the favorites for the gold but he raised his game and never looked in trouble from his second jump - something he seems to be able to do at the major championships.

The pressure he puts on the field could maybe explain the struggles of his main rivals, Jeff Henderson (USA) who went out of the event after his third jump, and defending champion Aleksandr Menkov (Russia) who could only manage a modest 8.02m.

One thing is for sure, the mummers of the the Olympic champion's success being a "fluke" have been blown out the water, as he takes his place along side the best British athletics has produced.  With Rio just a year away, he has to now be confident he can become a double Olympic champion.

Here is the list of Greg Rutherford's winning championships jumps:

2012 Olympics Games - 8.31m

2014 European games - 8.29m

2014 Commonwealth Games - 8.20m

2015 World Championships - 8.41m
