Roma battled to a 1-1 draw at Sampdoria in the first leg of their Coppa Italia quarter-final tie on Wednesday despite playing for over 70 minutes with 10 men.

The Giallorossi, who currently occupy second place in Serie A, had French defender Philippe Mexes dismissed in the 18th minute after he collected two yellow cards.

Samp finally made their numerical advantage count just after the hour mark when Reto Ziegler put them in front.
