Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea sent a tweet to teammate Wayne Rooney during the Red Devils’ 4-0 win over Club Brugge on Wednesday night.

Rooney scored a hat-trick to help secure Manchester United’s place in the Champions League group stages - and De Gea responded by sending a tweet containing three football emojis, presumably one for every goal the England international netted.

The tweet has since been retweeted over 7,000 times and received over 6,000 ‘favourites’ - but the replies are a mixed bag from the Red Devils’ faithful.

Some drew encouragement from the Spaniard’s latest tweet, seeing it as an indication that De Gea plans to stay at Old Trafford following a summer of intense speculation surrounding his future.

While others were keen to tell De Gea where he could shove his tweet after failing to commit himself to Manchester United.

Real Madrid fans, meanwhile, also popped up in the replies with comments encouraging De Gea to join Los Blancos.

De Gea concerned transfer won't happen

It’s now crystal clear that De Gea wants to join Real Madrid before the transfer window closes next Tuesday, but it’s currently touch and go as to whether an agreement between the two clubs will be reached.

A stand-off has developed and Manchester United have made it clear they will not sell the world-class goalkeeper unless Real Madrid meet their €40 million asking price - a fee the Spanish giants believe is too hefty for a goalkeeper with less than a year to run on his contract.

United, though, would be more than happy to offload De Gea if it results in the acquisition of Gareth Bale.

The Wales international is determined to prove himself at the Bernabeu following a difficult second season, but Manchester United hope the 26-year-old will change his mind if Real Madrid fans boo him against Real Betis this weekend.
