Lionel Messi has been crowned the UEFA best player of year, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, after helping his club to an historic treble last season.

Messi received the award for the second time in his career ahead of his Barcelona team-mate Luis Suarez and Ronaldo.

The Portugal captain, who saw his Madrid side stutter and end the previous campaign without any silverware, looked visibly annoyed by Messi's latest accolade as the personal battle for success between world football's two superpowers wages on.

The Argentinian superstar first claimed the accolade in 2011 and scored 58 goals in 57 appearances last season to claim this years trophy.

Messi and his team-mate Suarez were in scintillating form last season as Barcelona claimed the La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League titles.

Along with Brazilian Neymar the Catalan club's front three scored a mind blowing 122 goals to blow all competitors out of the water.

Ronaldo, who won the award in 2014, will be hoping his side can improve this season and challenge Barcelona for silverware on all fronts.

Whenever an award is up for grabs in Spanish or European football it is always the case that Messi and Ronaldo will face off and such is the competitive nature of the two players that neither wants to come second best.

The major individual honour that both players will be desperate to win is the Ballon d'Or. The 2015 winner will be announced on January 12 and both players will be hoping they can add another to incredible collections.

Messi is a four-time winner having claimed the accolade in 2009, 10,11 and 12. While Ronaldo has claimed the prize on three occasions.
