New season, new squad, a chance to defend the title. At least that is what Chelsea fans will have hoped for at the beginning and probably still do. The first few games usually throw a few surprises, this season is no exception, with Leicester and Crystal Palace currently occupying Champions League places.
However, if you are a team who is genuine in your resolve to win the league then you simply must win more than you lose and generally win comfortably. Chelsea have not done that at all so far this season with one draw, a hammering by rivals Manchester City and a scraped win against West Brom.
Chelsea manager José Mourinho recently boasted about the amount Chelsea’s rivals had forked out for new players in the summer, shortly before landing Pedro (and still being strongly linked to £30 million John Stones of Everton).

Looking to the future?
This may have worked as a bit of a mind game had Chelsea secured a couple of convincing wins, rather than the sole point they had from the Swansea game at the time.
Their signings of Asmir Begovic (28-years-old, still young for a goalkeeper), Baba Rahman and Kenedy imply they have one eye on the future. Despite this, Pedro at 28 and the loan of last season’s Manchester United flop, Falcao (29) show that José cannot resist a punt on an older player.
Neither of these players are exactly ancient, but for the majority of footballers, with injuries and the intensity of the game, being over the age of 25/26 is a hindrance.
Chelsea title defence over?
I, like many would have been happy to have a little wager on Chelsea winning the league before the season. Now with the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Southampton, Stoke, Everton and arguably even Man United expected to find better form and the possibility of Crystal Palace, Swansea and Leicester maintaining theirs, Chelsea’s rule looks to be over again for another season.
