Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has branded Wayne Rooney an "unusual star" after he gave up the chance to score a fourth goal against Club Brugge in Manchester United's Champions League qualifier this week.

Having already secured his hat-trick in the game, Rooney handed Javier Hernandez the chance to end his 16-month goal drought but he slipped and pulled his shot wide, much to Louis van Gaal's dismay.

Herrera, who was on the scoresheet in the 7-1 aggregate win, says their aren’t many top level strikers who would give up a penalty for the sake of the team, but praised Rooney for doing just that. He said: “It was a great gesture. It was unselfish, but this shows that Wayne is always thinking of the team.

“He knew it was important for Chicharito to score, so he gave the ball to him. When you are a star, that kind of thing is not so usual, so we are lucky to have Wayne with us.

“It was a great night for Wayne. He is our captain and leader and we are happy for him. When he scores, everything is always easier for us. But it’s not just that, we are always helping each other.

“It is important for Wayne to score, but it is also important for him that we win.”

Man Utd not expected to complete any more transfers

Manchester United may not sign any more players before the summer transfer window closes on Tuesday, but Victor Valdes and Jonny Evans are both expected to leave Old Trafford.

The Daily Mail claim there is a “growing belief” at Old Trafford that the departures of the two out-of-favour Manchester United players will be the only two concluded transfer deals before the window shuts next week.

Schmeichel wants De Gea to stay

Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel wants David de Gea to commit his long term future to the club.

He said: "I hope that we'll see him. I hope that some kind of resolution is found within the next couple of days. I would love David de Gea to commit to Manchester United, you know, and sign a new five-year contract. He has been absolutely outstanding in the last two seasons.
