Chelsea have spoken to Nantes over a potential deal for Senegalese defender Papy Djilobodji, with the centre-back available for around £5.5million.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who claim that Jose Mourinho’s need for another central defender is pushing him towards the lower echelons of Ligue 1.

Mourinho intent

It’s said the Blues have already tried to land the likes of Aymen Abdennour and Marquinhos this summer, but have been knocked back in their attempts.

They’ve also registered an interest in Ezequiel Garay and John Stones, though neither of those deals can realistically be pushed through by the summer transfer deadline.

As a result it has left Mourinho worried over his options at the back; a pertinent issue given how poorly the Blues have started off the campaign.

Issues at the back

With John Terry in all sorts of trouble regarding his form, and Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma not impressing either, it’s said the Special One wants another defender in before the window slams shut.

Djilobodji could well an ideal option given his frame and obvious quality, though there are other interested parties in the hunt for his signature.
