Victor Valdes dropped a big hint that he plans to stay at Old Trafford until at least January after changing his header picture on both Twitter and Facebook to the Manchester United emblem on Monday night.

The Spanish goalkeeper was set to join Besiktas last week, only for the move to collapse at the eleventh hour after the Turkish club reportedly changed the terms of an agreed deal.

Valdes subsequently pulled the plug on the deal and will, unless anything happens between now and 6pm this evening, still be a Manchester United player beyond this summer.

Reports on Monday suggested the former Barcelona star is prepared to make peace with Van Gaal following their bust-up last season.

The 33-year-old was left out of Manchester United’s pre-season tour squad by the veteran Dutch coach, who also moved the goalkeeper’s kit to the Under-21’s dressing room, after he allegedly refused to play in an Under-21 match last term.

United fans react on Twitter

Van Gaal no longer needs Valdes

This wasn’t the first time the two men had come to blows, however. Back in 2002 they fell out for similar reasons while working together at Barcelona.

But Van Gaal has no need for Valdes after signing his replacement, Sergio Romero, this summer.

As it stands, David de Gea will remain with Manchester United for the time being, although there could still be a twist if Real Madrid are able to convince those in charge that all the relevant paperwork was submitted in time.
