PSV Eindhoven captain Timmy Simons has admitted the defending champions need to strengthen their squad during the winter transfer window following defeat to FC Groningen.

PSV slipped to a 2-1 loss on Wednesday to allow Feyenoord to climb to the top of the Eredivisie table following their 2-0 win over city rivals Sparta Rotterdam.

Belgian midfielder Simons felt PSV´s defeat was fair and is aware they must improve if they are to retain the league title, telling "We have suffered too many blows in the past few months. It is hard to take but the loss was the right result - for the first 20 minutes Groningen won everything."
