Espanyol coach Ernesto Valverde was a happy man after seeing his side move into the top three of La Liga with an away victory over European rivals Atletico Madrid.

In-form Espanyol stretched their unbeaten run to 14 league and cup games with a 2-1 win at the Vicente Calderon, although it needed a late Luis Garcia strike to see off an Atletico side that had been reduced to nine men.

"It was an important game for us and also for Atletico. We want to be in the Champions League," he said.
