Karim Benzema proves his worth to Rafael Benitez

Despite numerous reports linking French international striker Karim Benzema with a move away from the Bernabeu this summer, the Real Madrid frontman quickly quashed any lingering rumours regarding his future by revealing on social media his commitment to the cause.

In some ways, manager Rafael Benitez may see those rumours as a blessing in disguise as Benzema’s display in Saturday’s 5-0 romping home victory over Real Betis was one of a man intent of proving his value to Los Blancos.

Real were a shadow of the side that pitifully slumped to a 0-0 draw at La Liga newcomers Sporting Gijon on the opening weekend.

The attacking threat consisting of frightening pace and ability was evident from the get go, with Gareth Bale also reminding those that had begun to question his role at Madrid that he remains a key part in attack, grabbing two of the five goals.

The real highlight for Benitez though would have been the performance of Benzema, who’s return to the starting line up seemed to give those around him the lift that they had so desperately needed last weekend.

Rare trait

The Frenchman’s goal was a clear reminder of the quality the he poses - quickly maneuvering himself into a position inside the box before rifling his shot beyond the Betis goalkeeper. His ability to hold the ball up and bring others into play, is a rare trait in a striker in the modern game. Arguably there isn’t a frontman as good as Benzema when he is at his best.

Real are still far from the finished article under Benitez but this result, buoyed by the return to form and fitness of several of his key players would certainly have given the Spaniard a much needed confidence-booster.

Benzema will remain at the spearhead of the Madrid attack and could well be the key to a prolific season on all three fronts for Los Blancos.

Retaining the form and fitness of his star striker will be a huge contributing factor if Real are to achieve further success. Cristiano Ronaldo remains on the peripheral of his capabilities so far, but it is only a matter of time before we run out of superlatives to describe his performances again soon.
