AZ Alkmaar coach Louis van Gaal was not too despondent after seeing his side´s European campaign come to an end on Thursday night.

AZ lost 3-2 to Everton to finish fourth in their group, and were always chasing the game after going behind after just 63 seconds.

"It´s a pity that we are out of Europe," said Van Gaal. "But I don´t want to speak about a lost season. If we finish in the top five of the Eredivisie we could play Champions League football and then we will have done a better job than last season."
