Chelsea recorded a goalless draw at home to Valencia on one of those meaningless Champions League nights when fates had already been settled, but manager Avram Grant caused a stir by substituting £30million striker Andriy Shevchenko at half-time.

Chelsea were already certain of progress to the knockout stages - they have never missed out in six seasons and this is the fifth time they have been winners of their first round group.

But they would surely have liked to finish it with a flourish and started well with Frank Lampard and Shaun Wright-Phillips carving up the opposition.
