Greg Rutherford ended a memorable summer on a high as he won the Diamond Race to go with his world long jump title.

Nine days after completing the full set of major titles by winning gold at the World Championships in Beijing, Rutherford leapt out to 8.32 metres to win the Weltklasse Zurich meeting and land the Diamond League crown

The 28-year-old won his fourth Diamond League meeting of the season by virtue of having a further second-best effort, of 8.27m, than American Marquis Dendy, who also jumped 8.32m.

His night's work in Switzerland netted Rutherford 50,000 US dollars (?32,773) - USD 10,000 for winning the meeting and USD 40,000 for winning the Diamond Race - and a diamond trophy.

He finished well clear at the top of the overall standings on 21 points, with Dendy his closest challenger on 10.

The Milton Keynes athlete, whose achievement at the Bird's Nest stadium was overshadowed by his outspoken attack on UK Athletics, is now the reigning Olympic, world, European, Commonwealth and Diamond Race champion, a hugely impressive run of consistency at the very highest level.

Rutherford said after his win in Beijing that he hoped his success would finally silence the critics who branded his Olympic win a fluke. This latest achievement is yet more ammunition to shoot down any who remain.

He said: "It was very important to come out here and to win again. I still managed to come out on top, so I am absolutely over the moon.

"The other jumpers maybe said, 'We are going to take him in Zurich'. But it did not work.

"This victory means a hell of a lot to me. It is the last crown for me."

Lynsey Sharp bounced back from failing to make the final in Beijing by finishing second over 800m in one minute 59.37 seconds. It meant the Scot finished second in the Diamond Race to Kenya's Eunice Sum, who won her fifth meeting of the season in Zurich in 1min 59.14secs.
