Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has taken to Twitter for the first time since failing to complete a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The shot-stopper, who is currently with the Spanish national side, tweeted a picture of himself alongside compatriot and Red Devils teammate Juan Mata.

The Spanish squad are currently in Oviedo ahead of their clash with Slovakia in Euro 2016 qualifying tonight, and De Gea has claimed that he's "with the most popular guy in town."

Mata, of course, was born in Oviedo and starred for the club at youth level before departing for Real Madrid in 2003.

The Oviedo faithful, then, would have no doubt been pleased that Mata received a call up to the Spain squad after recent snubs. One thing's for sure, De Gea is certainly happy to be in the company of the classy playmaker.

De Gea must return

There's no doubt about it, Manchester United need David de Gea just as much as he needs them. Ultimately, the 'keeper will be desperate to star between the sticks for Spain at Euro 2016, but he has a job to do at Old Trafford first.

Of course, it's crucial that the United hierarchy manage to get him back on side sooner rather than later, as he has the credentials and class to help the Old Trafford outfit challenge for the Premier League title under the Louis van Gaal regime.

De Gea could yet have a key role to play in the Red Devils' season, so it's now up to Van Gaal to get his best player back in the team.
