Scotland hopes hang in the balance

Scotland´s Euro 2008 qualification hopes were killed off by goals at the beginning and end of a pulsating 90 minutes at Hampden with Italian running out 2-1 winners.

Luca Toni shot the Italians in front in the second minute but Scotland recovered to dominate and Barry Ferguson bundled home a 65th-minute leveller.

But Christian Panucci headed an injury-time winner after a controversial decision to award Italy a free-kick.
