A deal isn't done in the NFL until pen is put to paper and a contract is signed.

Unfortunately for former Houston Texans defensive tackle Louis Nix III he is finding that out the hard way this week following his release by the Texas franchise.

Last minute hitch

Having looked to have found himself new employment when the New York Giants swooped in to pick him up off waivers this weekend, Nix is now back on the wire after a failed physical led the Big Apple team to pull the plug on the deal.

Louis Nix III has a history of injury concerns during his brief time in the NFL and, as reported by the Houston Chronicle, the Giants were unable to be convinced the 24-year-old could stay healthy.

ESPN's NFL reporter Field Yates was amongst the first to discover the issue:

The Giants clearly weren't expecting any such problems when they secured Nix III off of waivers on Sunday. They had even tweeted out the jersey number the former Notre Dame stand-out would wear for the upcoming season.

It is unclear at this stage exactly what the issues was that led to the failed physical, but with the third-round pick having missed his entire rookie campaign through a combination of knee and wrist issues, the signs don't look good for Nix moving forward.

As for the Giants, they don't appear set to replace Nix directly - at least not before their 2015 season opener against the Dallas Cowboys this weekend.
