Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has taken to Twitter after signing a new long-term contract with the club.

The Spanish international, who had been heavily linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid throughout the course of the summer, put pen to paper on a new long-term deal with the Red Devils earlier today.

In fact, De Gea has committed himself to Old Trafford until the summer of 2019, with an option to extend the contract by a further year.

And, with the transfer saga now finally over, De Gea has taken to social media to thank Manchester United fans for their support.

The shot-stopper tweeted: "I feel proud to announce that I'll continue with you and @ManUtd. Thanks for your unconditional support!"

The world's best?

There's no doubt about it, it really is remarkable news for all involved with Manchester United that De Gea is staying on at the club for the long-term.

At the end of the day, despite the transfer saga with Real Madrid, De Gea is a fans' favourite at the Theatre of Dreams, and will no doubt be desperate to prove his credentials for the club once again in the immediate future.

Ultimately, over the course of the past couple of years, De Gea has gone from strength-to-strength and is now recognised as one of the leading 'keepers in world football. At 24-years-old, there's no reason why the Spanish international won't go on to achieve great things in Manchester for the foreseeable future.

Keeping De Gea is a marvelous coup for United, who will be determined to return to the summit of the Premier League sooner rather than later. With De Gea between the sticks, the club stands a real chance of doing just that.
