Lionel Messi was absent from Barcelona's training session today but is available for selection for the trip to Atletico Madrid.

The Argentine superstar has not trained with the Catalan club all week, having been on international duty and has missed today's session due to the birth of his second child.

Spanish publication, AS, reported the child, named Benjamin, was born today.

The four-time Ballon d'Or winner had permission from manager Luis Enrique to be with his girlfriend, Antonella Roccuzzo.

The 28-year-old is expected to be involved in tomorrow's match with title rivals Atletico and according to Marca, he will head straight to the Vicente Calderon.

Something has to give in Madrid with both clubs holding a 100 per cent record after two games.

The Catalan club have lacked their usual fluency this season and have won both their games 1-0. Perhaps surprisingly, Messi is yet to score having missed a penalty against Athletic Bilbao.

Diego Simeone's Atletico side have looked strong as they attempt to wrestle the title back from Barcelona.

After beating Las Palmas 1-0 on the opening day of the season, Atleti swept aside Sevilla with a perfect display of counter-attacking football to claim a 3-0 win.

Having already seen Real Madrid drop points, the Camp Nou club will be hoping to take all three at the Calderon and give themselves an early advantage in the race for the La Liga title.

Barca will be confident of victory having won on three of their last six visits to the Calderon. However, Messi's personal success has been limited, scoring just once in his last six trips to Atletico.
